Marquis Wins Division I Diving Championship

Freshman Kristen Marquis of Santa Margarita finished with 509.30 points to win the Southern Section Division I girls’ diving finals Wednesday at Heritage Aquatic Complex in Irvine.

Marquis scored 60.8 on a reverse 2 1/2, the highest score of the day.

Edison sophomore Kellie Brennan finished second with 474.60 and Kenesha Jespersen of El Toro took third with 462.80.

Shannon Pace of Capistrano Valley (462.15) took fourth, Alexis Sowa of Thousand Oaks was fifth (448.55) and Delilah More of Capistrano Valley sixth (437.60).

In boys’ diving, the three Dumais brothers of Ventura Buena dominated the field with Justin, the oldest, winning the Division I diving championships with 692.15 points, breaking his record of 649.70 set last year.

Justin Dumais had the highest single dive score when he did a reverse 1 1/2 somersault and a 3 1/2 twist for 89 points on his last dive.

Sophomore Troy Dumais finished second with 684.85 and Brice Dumais, a freshman, took third with 537.25.

Finishing fourth was Charles Low of Newbury Park (456.35), followed by Adrian Samples of Capistrano Valley (442.20), who was the only Orange County male diver who finished in the medal round. Erik Patton of Westlake Village Westlake took sixth (431.35).

In the Century League boys’ tennis finals:

Hol wins title--Foothill sophomore Joost Hol swept three consecutive Villa Park opponents on the way to the league singles title. Hol defeated B.K. Chang, 6-3, 6-1, and Chad Smith, 6-3, 6-0.

In the Empire League finals:

El Dorado sweeps--El Dorado’s Michael Peng defeated Bryan Hollenbeck of Loara, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, to win the Empire League singles title. In doubles, El Dorado’s James Plahy and Ali Kermani defeated Hollenbeck and James Pai, 6-4, 6-4.

In the South Coast League finals:

Fallon wins singles title--Top-seeded Brandon Fallon of Dana Hills won the individual singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mission Viejo’s Eric Bachelor.

Second-seeded Janne Sivonen and Dave Beydler of Mission Viejo won the doubles title with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over top-seeded Eli Engle and Jason Gavilan of San Clemente.

In the Sunset League doubles finals:

Albrecht and Jhu win--It took a tie-breaker for Dan Albrecht and Eugene Jhu of Edison to win the league title by defeating Tom Lloyd and Matt Fryer of Esperanza, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5).

In the Division II wild-card volleyball playoffs:

Ocean View 3, El Dorado 2--Glenn Tanner had 20 kills and Nathan Roth had 10 to help Ocean View defeat El Dorado, 2-15, 15-4, 15-8, 13-15, 15-10. Ocean View will play Calvary Chapel in a first-round match there Friday at 7 p.m.

Villa Park 3, Upland 0--Eric Helenihi had 10 kills as Villa Park (8-11) defeated Upland, 15-10, 15-5, 15-9. Villa Park plays Garden Grove League winner La Quinta in the first round Friday night.
