Carlson to Coach Basketball at El Dorado

Wayne Carlson, who spent the last two seasons coaching men’s basketball at Orange Coast College, has been named girls’ basketball coach at El Dorado, the school announced.

Carlson, a teacher at El Dorado, replaces Tara Brown, who left after one season. He is the program’s third coach in three years following the death of Gary Raya before the 1995-96 season.

Carlson coached the El Dorado boys’ varsity team from 1987-93.

His experience includes assisting the men’s program at San Diego Mesa College from 1973-78, when he became the women’s coach for two years. He coached high school boys’ basketball at Ontario and Alta Loma before taking over the El Dorado program in 1987.

Mike Fazio, boys’ tennis coach at Irvine High for the last 14 seasons, has resigned for personal reasons, Athletic Director Rick Curtis announced Wednesday.

Fazio will continue to teach physical education and drivers training at the school and coach sophomore football.

The Huntington Beach girls’ volleyball team is ranked No. 3 and Dana Hills is ranked No. 4 in the overall top 10 in this week’s state rankings.

Laguna Beach, previously unranked, moved in at No. 6 and Fountain Valley dropped one spot to No. 7.

County teams in the state divisional rankings include: Division I--No. 3 Dana Hills, No. 5 Laguna Beach, No. 6 Fountain Valley and No. 9 Newport Harbor; Division II--No. 1 Huntington Beach, No. 7 Cypress and No. 8 Santa Margarita; Division III--No. 5 Ocean View and No. 7 La Habra; Division IV--No. 2 Calvary Chapel; and Division V--No. 5 Capistrano Valley Christian.
