Thousand Oaks 28, Simi Valley 19--The Lancers (6-0-1, 4-0) took advantage of two big pass plays and held off the Pioneers (2-5, 0-4) to remain tied for first place with Camarillo.
After spotting Simi Valley a 7-0 lead on a 29-yard John Gonzalez’ scoring run midway through the first quarter, Scott McEwan of Thousand Oaks connected with Barrett Grindle on a 51-yard scoring bomb on the next play from scrimmage.
After playing much of the third quarter backed up in its own end, McEwan teamed with tight end Bryan Hill on a 73-yard pass play, setting up Eleo Cuadra’s eight-yard scoring run with 9:31 to play to put the Lancers ahead, 21-7.
Cuadra rushed for 94 yards in 23 carries and scored two touchdowns. McEwan completed seven of 12 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.
Simi Valley scored late touchdowns on a two-yard run by David Krewson and a 48-yard pass from Krewson to Mike Boyd. Gonzalez rushed for 73 yards in 10 carries.
