Return to San Fernando by Hundreds

San Fernando High hasn’t played football for all of its 100 years, but the Tigers have been celebrating a century worth of memories all season.

Each players’ helmet is adorned with a “100” sticker, even though San Fernando did not play football until 1914.

“Apparently, the school board of regents wouldn’t let them play until then,” said San Fernando historian and assistant coach Bill Frazier.

San Fernando was 2-3 in that inaugural season, including a 136-0 loss to Inglewood.

The Tigers have won five City Section titles (1937, 1953, 1967, 1974, 1975) and traditionally have been one of the strongest City Section teams in the area.

Between the junior varsity and varsity games tonight at homecoming against Granada Hills, all former players and cheerleaders will be invited onto the field.

Administrators are hoping players from the past eight decades attend. When the school recently inducted the unscored upon 1926 team into the school’s Hall of Fame, two former players showed up.

At San Fernando’s final home game this season on Nov. 15, the Tigers will rename their home field after Kevin Williams.

Williams was an All-City tailback who helped the Tigers win titles in 1974 and 1975. He played football and ran track at USC. Williams was killed in a train accident earlier this year.
