Gottlieb Gets Probation for Credit Card Theft

Doug Gottlieb, a former Tustin High and Notre Dame basketball player, was placed on probation for one year after pleading guilty to theft charges in a St. Joseph (Ind.) court for using stolen credit cards, his attorney, Bill Stanley, said Thursday.

Gottlieb, who left Notre Dame last spring, was charged with taking credit cards from students in his dormitory and purchasing more than $900 in merchandise.

The court suspended a one-year jail sentence and allowed Gottlieb to serve his probation in California. He also was fined $500, plus court costs, and is required to undergo counseling, according to Stanley. Gottlieb has made restitution to the three victims, Bob Gottlieb, his father, said last month. The case was treated as a misdemeanor.

Gottlieb was charged with felony theft in September after three students had filed complaints.

Gottlieb played in 27 games, starting 23, for Notre Dame last season. He is attending Golden West College but will not play basketball this season.
