A Star Might Be About to Be Born

Wonder what’s going to happen to the Cal State Northridge football team next year, when star receiver David Romines is gone?

We will likely get a sneak peak in today’s season finale against Eastern Washington, because Romines, who has a strained left hamstring, is doubtful to play.

That will leave freshman Aaron Arnold, a Monroe High graduate, at Romines’ position. And Jeff Kearin, the Northridge receivers coach, doesn’t think the Matadors will lose much.

“I think Aaron Arnold is going to be the greatest receiver to ever play here,” Kearin said.

Nothing like putting a little pressure on a kid.

A new game: The Cal Lutheran football team will have a new opponent in 1997.

Coach Scott Squires, a 1988 graduate of Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash., has made plans for the Kingsmen to play his alma mater in a two-year series, with next season’s nonconference game scheduled for Sept. 13 at Cal Lutheran.

“I’m married to the idea of playing PLU,” he said. “I can’t wait. I want to do that. There’s good Lutheran ties there, and I think that’s what we’re about.”

Not running on empty: When Jed Colvin competes in the NCAA Division III national championships today, he will be the first Cal Lutheran runner to do so in five years.

Colvin, a 1993 graduate of Saugus High, got to the championships at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill., with a third-place finish in 26 minutes, 28 seconds at last week’s Division III West regional championships at Prado Park in Chino.

By qualifying for the national finals, Colvin follows in the footsteps of Jonz Norine who advanced to the championships in 1991. After winning the west regional, Norine finished 60th in the final meet.

Has he ever heard of Randy Travis?: Reggie Robinson of The Master’s men’s basketball team was born and raised in Tennessee, but that doesn’t mean the 6-foot-8 senior forward is a fan of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Under the heading of “favorite music” in the team’s media guide, Robinson lists “anything but country.”
