Camarillo Stuns Santa Barbara

Darian Chappell of Camarillo High won two of three singles matches to help the Scorpions upset fourth-seeded Santa Barbara in a Southern Section Division IV girls’ tennis quarterfinal playoff match Tuesday at Santa Barbara.

Camarillo and Santa Barbara tied, 9-9, but the Scorpions won on the basis of games, 80-69, and will play top-seeded Newport Harbor in a semifinal Thursday.

Chappell won her matches by scores of 6-0 and lost, 6-4.

Camarillo’s No. 1 and 2 doubles teams of Brynne Chappell and Bettina Rettenmaier and AlisonGottlieb and Erin Jones were victorious in two of three sets.

Westlake 13, Burroughs 5--The Warriors (19-4) swept all nine singles points, including a forfeit victory for Erin Smith when Shaland Romero did not take the court for her final set in a Southern Section Division III quarterfinal at Burroughs.

Romero lost a tiebreaker to Helena Horak, 7-6 (7-5), then blew a 2-0 lead against Katy Smith in a 6-2 loss before Burroughs Coach Roy Bernhard informed Westlake Coach Connie Flanderka that Romero would not continue.

Westlake’s Lauren Gueff, an alternate for the Warriors, dislocated her shoulder on the bus ride home. She was taken to the hospital for examination.

Harvard-Westlake 10, Edison 8--Lindsy Forbess of Harvard-Westlake swept her three singles matches and the Wolverines’ doubles teams went 2-1 in the quarterfinal match of the Southern Section Division III playoffs at Edison.

Harvard-Westlake (16-7) will face Westlake on Thursday.

Forbess, the Wolverines’ No. 1 singles player, won her matches, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0.

Chaminade 16, La Canada 1--The Eagles (20-0) swept singles play against the Spartans (15-7) in a Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal match at Chaminade.

Monica Andrews and Monica Alonso swept their doubles opponents, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.

Palisades 7, Taft 0--The Toreadors were routed in a City Section 4-A Division semifinal at the Studio City Racquet Centre.

The top-seeded Dolphins won every match in straight sets and had an 84-12 edge in games.

Hamilton 5, Granada Hills 2--The No. 2 seeded Yankees coasted in the City 4-A semifinal match.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Cornerstone Christian d. Hemet Baptist Christian, 15-6, 15-9, 15-11--Julie Siefert had 12 kills and 18 assists and Julia Tamai added seven and 22 for Cornerstone Christian in the semifinal match of the Southern Section Division V-A playoffs at Hemet.

Flintridge Sacred Heart d. El Segundo 15-8, 15-5, 15-8--Audra Grim had 10 aces and Holly Doran added nine kills for the Tologs in a Division IV-AA semifinal match at El Segundo.
