A few months ago, Fountain Valley Police Chief Elvin G. Miali said he would get a “buzz” haircut if the Fountain Valley girls’ volleyball team won the Southern Section Division I-A championship.

After Fountain Valley defeated Capistrano Valley in three games Saturday to win the title, Miali announced he will keep his word.

Miali, father of Baron setter Carla Miali, will get his hair cut in front of the Baron student body today at 10:22 a.m. John McGovern of Dunk’s barbershop in Fountain Valley will do the cutting.

By Rod Perry Jr.’s count, he has won all 40 games he has played in at Mater Dei. The freshman team he played on went undefeated, as did the varsity team his sophomore year. He was on winning teams his first five games last year after moving back from Texas and before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Newport Harbor sophomore Alicia McFall nearly pulled off a stunning upset Saturday at the Southern Section cross-country finals at Mt. San Antonio College.

Although Buena Park junior Heather Garritson, a two-time section champion, was the heavy favorite in the Division III race, McFall challenged Garritson and even passed her in the final 300 meters. But Garritson outkicked McFall to finish first by four seconds.

“I started sprinting too soon,” McFall said. “But I’m happy. I beat my [personal record] by a minute.”
