Rancho Santiago Takes a Tumble in Soccer Playoffs

San Diego Mesa upset defending state champion Rancho Santiago, 1-0, Tuesday in the first round of the Southern California regional men’s soccer playoffs at Rancho Santiago.

Karlos Flores scored the unassisted goal for seventh-seeded San Diego Mesa in the 89th minute. Rancho Santiago (16-2-2) was seeded second.

Timothy Gorman had four saves for San Diego Mesa (11-3-2).

In another first-round game:

Santa Barbara 3, Irvine Valley 0--Flemming Sorensen scored in the 77th, 85th and 89th minute for host Santa Barbara (17-2). Irvine Valley finished 14-8-3.

In the first round of the Southern California women’s soccer playoffs:

Cypress 1, Long Beach City 0--Vedda Desatoff’s goal at the 39-minute mark proved to be the winner for Cypress (16-0-1). Cypress plays Orange Coast at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

Orange Coast 1, Ventura 0 (OT)--Brigit Fodor scored in the 110th minute on a penalty kick for visiting Orange Coast (14-2).

In first round of the Southern California women’s volleyball playoffs:

Golden West 3, College of Canyons 0--Lorna Lyttle had eight kills in Golden West’s 15-3, 15-8, 15-1 victory. Golden West is 21-1.

Fullerton 3, Chaffey 0--Nadia Hoerner had 13 kills and five blocks for third-seeded host Fullerton (15-2), which won, 15-4, 15-7, 15-8. The Hornets advanced to play Palomar, a 15-8, 15-13, 15-13 winner over Saddleback.
