Division V football championship
When: 7:30 p.m., Saturday.
Where: Cal State Fullerton.
Records: Santa Margarita 12-1, Newport Harbor 12-1.
Seedings: Santa Margarita is seeded No. 2 in the Division V playoffs; Newport Harbor is seeded No. 4.
Noteworthy: This rematch of their Sea View League game, which Santa Margarita won, 36-22, nearly two months ago should prove just as explosive. The earlier game’s most critical play came on the second snap of the second half, when Santa Margarita’s Brett Crowder tackled Raymond Ohrel at the end of a 72-yard run; on the next play, from the eight-yard line and on the verge of giving Newport Harbor a nine-point lead, Ohrel fumbled and the Eagles recovered. Four plays later, Santa Margarita scored to take a 20-16 lead. Still, Newport Harbor held a 22-20 advantage with less than four minutes remaining. Ohrel, who gained 259 yards and scored once in 35 carries the first time around, has to be equally sharp Saturday, as does Santa Margarita running back Billy Newman, who ran for 268 yards and two touchdowns in 28 carries and two touchdowns. Newport Harbor quarterback Josiah Fredriksen, a drop-back passer, threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns against the Eagles; Santa Margarita’s Carson Palmer, an adept scrambler, threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams are coming off emotional victories last week; Newport Harbor upset top-ranked Servite and Santa Margarita shut out high-scoring Tustin.
