Monarchs Win Brea Soccer Title

Mater Dei, ranked fourth in the county, scored all the goals it would need in the first half as it defeated Chino, 2-1, in the championship game of the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament Saturday at Brea Olinda.

Nick Marin scored the first goal on an assist from Tony Nicheletti, and Walter Camargo produced the second on a direct kick. Jeff McKeever had three saves in goal for the Monarchs (6-0-1).

In other Brea tournament games:

Servite 2, Sunny Hills 1--The Friars won the third-place game in a shootout by outscoring Sunny Hills, 4-3.

Upland 3, Irvine 2--Robert Lieberman scored the winning goal for Upland (10-2) with eight minutes to play. Terence Ngo and Matt Taylor each scored for Irvine (7-4-1).

In the Hacienda Heights Wilson boys’ soccer tournament:

Westminster 3, Sante Fe Springs St. Paul 1--Leo Jimenez netted two goals and Francisco Avalos added one for Westminster.

In the Magnolia boys’ soccer tournament:

Estancia 3, Garden Grove 0--Silvio Alderete, Jose Quintana and Robert Castellano each scored for Estancia (4-1). Brad Wayman and Hilario Arriaga combined to make five saves in the Eagles’ shutout.

Estancia 4, Magnolia 0--Silvio Alderete and Orlin Ramos scored first-half goals for Estancia (5-1). Jose Quintana and Esaul Mendoza added second-half goals as Estancia advanced to the semifinals against Long Beach Poly at 11 a.m. Monday.

Kennedy 1, Villa Park 1 (Kennedy advances on penalty kicks, 4-3)--Matt McClary scored a second-half goal for Villa Park (4-2-2) in a second-round match. Kennedy is 5-1-1.

McClary also scored two goals in a first-round 2-1 victory over Whittier Pioneer.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Foothill 3, Tustin 1--Justin Entsminger scored goals in the 55th minute and 70th minute for Foothill (2-4-1). Matt Ledford scored the Knights’ first goal in the 12th minute on a free kick. Francisco Servin scored for Tustin and Sergio Vargas had 10 saves for the Tillers.

Trabuco Hills 1, Loara 0--Jay Hunger scored the only goal in the 60th minute, his fifth goal in five games, for Trabuco Hills (3-2-1). Freshman goalkeeper Jay Arnston had 12 saves for the shutout.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Mater Dei 1, Fountain Valley 0--Kelly Kersh had nine saves in her second shutout of the season for Mater Dei (4-2). Sara Stratton scored in the second half for the Monarchs.

Santa Margarita 4, Dana Hills 0--Sara Henderson scored two goals to lead top-ranked Santa Margarita past No. 4 Dana Hills. Maresa Zanetti and Sunny Donathan scored the other goals for the Eagles (5-0-1), who led, 2-0, at halftime.

In the San Clemente girls’ water polo tournament:

Capistrano Valley 10, Mater Dei 5--Jessica Povey scored seven goals to lead Capistrano Valley in the consolation game. Povey also scored two goals in an earlier 8-3 victory over San Clemente.
