Golden West Gets Pitching, Triple Play to Win

Golden West got solid pitching and a triple play to beat visiting San Diego Mesa, 4-2, in the Cypress Mitsubishi Classic baseball tournament Sunday.

Golden West (6-1) has won five in row, its longest winning streak since 1993.

The triple play came in the sixth inning after Mesa had runners on first and third.

Mesa’s Justin Spencer hit what appeared to be a line-drive single toward left-center, but shortstop Josh Roberts leaped high to spear the ball for the first out. Roberts then threw to third for a forceout and third baseman Ken Sundstrom threw to first baseman Adam Bass to complete the triple play.

Kevin Stuart (1-0) pitched the first six innings and Adam Peters worked the final three for his fifth save for Golden West. The two combined to give up five singles.

Stuart also drove in Golden West’s first run with a first-inning double to score Sundstrom, who had tripled with two outs.

Golden West got three more runs in the second on four hits and two errors. Mike Tyler, who had three hits, had a two-run single in the inning.

In other tournament games:

Cypress 4, Canada 3--Relief pitcher Greg Jacobs struck out five, including the side in the ninth, in 2 1/3 innings to get the victory for host Cypress (8-2).

With the score tied, 3-3, Scott Daeley started the eighth with a single and went to third on a single by Jacobs, who had four singles. Craig Kuzmic followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.

Randy Case had a run-scoring groundout and Junior Rodriguez had an RBI double in the first and Case added a sacrifice fly in the third for Cypress.

Saddleback 15, Antelope Valley 6--Nick Punto was four for five with three RBIs for Saddleback (7-0). Mike Leinen picked up his second victory.

In the Hancock tournament:

Hancock 8, Rancho Santiago 7--Jeff Pritchard had a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth to break a 7-7 tie for host Hancock (3-3). The hit came with a count of no balls and two strikes.

The loss ended Rancho Santiago’s 14-game winning streak, which dated to the final eight games of last season. The Dons, who beat San Jose earlier Sunday, 5-1, have won three of the last four state titles, including the last two.

Rancho Santiago (6-1) tied it, 7-7, with two runs in the seventh. Kevin Burford, who also had an RBI double, grounded out to drive in one run and another scored on a throwing error.

In the Apple softball tournament:

Cypress 8, Palomar 4--Jessica Walker had a three-run homer in the third inning and drove in the go-ahead run with a single as Cypress (8-0) scored five times in the sixth to take a four-run lead in the championship game.

It was the fourth victory of the day for Cypress. The Chargers also beat Moorpark, 5-1, Antelope Valley, 6-1, and Chaffey, 8-0. Walker was the winning pitcher in the Chaffey game.

Palomar reached the final by defeating Rancho Santiago, 2-0.

In the Long Beach softball tournament:

Long Beach 2, Fullerton 0--Carrie Ledesma pitched a four-hitter in the title game for host Long Beach (4-1). Fullerton had beaten Long Beach earlier, 3-2, to force a second game in the double-elimination tournament.

Tasha Sisco had two hits, including an RBI double that gave Fullerton a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning of the first game.

Fullerton beat Riverside, 8-0, also Sunday.
