Ignatius Rusli of Anaheim, the second-seeded player in the U.S. National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club, won his first-round match Thursday.

Rusli beat James Young of Palo Alto, 15-2, 15-3. Kevin Han of Colorado Springs, the top-seeded player, beat Kiam Tey of Tustin, 15-4, 15-3, in another first-round match.

More than 200 high school boys’ basketball players, including at least 40 from Orange County, are scheduled to compete in the three-day Pump and Run Easter tournament, beginning today at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.

Daily admission for the tournament, which ends with a championship game at 6 p.m. Sunday, is $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and younger.

Estancia High junior forward Sam Nelson, who averaged 17.5 points this season, will be among several of next season’s top Southland recruits featured in the 32-team field.

Five boys and two girls from Orange County will compete in the Double Pump Classic on April 26 at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Among those participating are Mater Dei’s Kevin Augustine, David Castleton and Tom Lippold, and Woodbridge’s Brandon Beeson and Chris Burgess. Mater Dei’s Gary McKnight will coach one of the teams. Also participating will be former Mater Dei standout Schea Cotton of Bellflower St. John Bosco.

Woodbridge’s Krissy Duperron and Ocean View’s Jennifer Tuiolosega will participate in the girls’ game, which tips off at 5 p.m. The boys’ game begins about 7 p.m. Both games will be televised on Fox Sports West 2.

Parnelli Jones and Rod Millen will participate in the third annual Mini Grand Prix on Saturday at the corner of Katella and Valley View in Cypress. The event, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., features a pancake breakfast, children’s ride area and toy giveaway. There is no admission charge, but proceeds from the participating race teams, children’s rides and concessions benefit the Arthritis Foundation.

Jones and Millen will race at 12:30 in an exhibition.
