High School Golfers to Play at All-Star Tournament

The top senior high school golfers in the county will compete in the Orange County All-Star Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. today at Newport Beach Country Club.

Dennis Hakeman, an assistant coach at El Dorado High, will coach the North team, which features Adam Ainbinder of Servite and Bret Parker of Mater Dei.

Mission Viejo Coach Bob Minier will coach the South, which is led by Nicholas Fritz of Santa Margarita, Bob Sauer of Mission Viejo and Justin Shapiro of Newport Harbor.

The South has won the event all nine times it has been held.

North--Steve Bendt (Brea Olinda), Emerson Oh (Brea Olinda), Adam Ainbinder (Servite), Ed Garabedian (Servite), Pete Hergert (Esperanza), Anthony Mendoza (Huntington Beach), Matt Ching (Tustin), Bret Parker (Mater Dei).

South--Justin Shapiro (Newport Harbor), Nicolas Fritz (Santa Margarita), Kevin Osborn (Dana Hills), Jeff Perry (Estancia), Geoff Cohn (Villa Park), Adam Hambarian (Villa Park), John Chappell (El Toro), Bob Sauer (Mission Viejo).

Treva Whitaker of Saddleback College has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Oklahoma.

Whitaker, who attended Mission Viejo High, was an All-Orange Empire Conference infielder the last two seasons. She hit .296 and played third base this past season.

Jennifer Brundage of Irvine has been named to USA Softball’s national team.

Brundage, an infielder who played collegiately at UCLA, will be part of the team representing the United States at Superball ’97 in July at Columbus, Ga.

Among other players selected were Olympians Lisa Fernandez and Dot Richardson.
