Thompson Sets La Reina Soccer Record

La Reina High girls’ soccer standout Aimee Thompson had a day to remember Saturday in the Regents’ two victories at the Royal tournament.

Thompson, a senior who has played every position except goalkeeper for La Reina in her four-year varsity career, broke the program’s career assist record and tied the goal mark with two goals and three assists in victories over Grant and Yosemite.

Thompson had a goal and two assists in a 5-1 victory over Grant. Her goal and assist in a 2-0 defeat of Yosemite allowed her to break the assist record of 64 and tie the goal standard with 84.

In other girls’ soccer tournament games:

Alemany 1, Piedmont 1--Brooke Provence scored with 10 minutes to play off a pass from Nicolette Harrod to lift the Indians (1-2-1) into a tie in a pool-play game at the Royal tournament.

Chaminade 2, Maranatha 0--For the second consecutive year, the Eagles (9-0-1) defeated the Minutemen (5-2-1) in the final and midfielder Jen Valentine was chosen most valuable player.

Valentine and Michelle French scored. French and Carli Stokes had goals in a 2-0 semifinal defeat of Immaculate Heart.

Burbank 2, Cerritos Valley Christian 2--Jessica Gonzalez and Janine Walters scored for the Bulldogs (4-3), who won the consolation final in a shootout after regulation play ended in a tie.

Janine Walters, Melissa Nimtz and Carmen Hernandez scored in a 3-0 consolation semifinal defeat of Crossroads.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Simi Valley 3, Morningside 3--The Pioneers (6-1) advanced on penalty kicks, 5-3, after letting a 3-1 lead slip away in the final 20 minutes of a South Torrance tournament pool-play game.

Notre Dame 7, Salesian 0--Kevin Murray scored four goals for the Knights (2-2-1) in a nonleague game at Notre Dame.

WRESTLING

Rio Mesa tournament--Moving up in weight, Dustin Clocherty defeated Drew Campbell, 15-10, at 135 pounds to help Ventura to a 38-30 victory over Blackfoot (Idaho).

Both teams were 9-0 in dual meets entering the final round of pool play.

Clocherty and his brother, Trevor, Cristobal Gonzalez, Cody Naumec and Joe Martinez all won individual titles for Ventura. Martinez finished 10-0 with 10 pins at 215 pounds.
