Hearlihy Reinstated at Alemany

Alemany High girls’ basketball Coach Melissa Hearlihy, who was fired June 5 after 12 seasons, has been reinstated.

Hearlihy, 35, who led Alemany to nine Mission League championships and two Southern Section titles, rejoined the team for a summer league game Monday night at Simi Valley High.

Hearlihy said she met with Father Robert Milbauer, Alemany’s principal, on Monday and signed a one-year contract. Milbauer could not be reached for comment.

A spokesman for the archdiocese of Los Angeles, of which Alemany is a member, said he had no knowledge of Hearlihy’s reinstatement.

“[Milbauer] called me this morning and offered me my contract,” Hearlihy said. “I was told I was cleared of any wrongdoing. I’m happy to be back at Alemany.”

Hearlihy last month was told by school administrators that her contract would not be renewed for unspecified reasons. Last week, she filed an appeal with the archdiocese.

Damon Zumwalt, the father of sophomore forward Devan Zumwalt, later admitted filing a grievance against Hearlihy last season and subsequently meeting with archdiocese officials regarding her conduct.
