Jeremy Weinberg, pitcher and infielder for Sonora, has agreed to attend Cal State Fullerton this fall. Weinberg, who chose Fullerton over UCLA, Loyola, Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge, said he informed school officials Monday night that he would accept their scholarship offer.
“I decided I wanted to stay close to home where I have so much support,” said Weinberg, who was selected in the 42nd round by St. Louis in this year’s free-agent draft. “I didn’t want to leave that.”
Weinberg, who will play third at Fullerton, was the Freeway League player of the year and earned a spot on The Times All-County first team as the designated hitter. At the plate he averaged .416, with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs. As a pitcher for the league champion Raiders, Weinberg was 11-1, 1.32, with 81 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings.
