1996 in Review

The regular season turned out to be a warmup for the Southern Section Division V championship game, where first-place Santa Margarita scored a 38-0 victory over second-place Newport Harbor. By the way, all those points were scored in the first half. For the Eagles, it capped a dominant playoff run in which they outscored opponents, 158-6, and didn’t give up a point in their last 14 quarters.

Newport Harbor was in good company, because Santa Margarita had shut out Tustin, which set a county single-season scoring record, in the semifinals, 31-0. Santa Margarita was led by league player of the year Billy Newman (2,320 yards, 24 touchdowns), quarterback Carson Palmer (2,084 yards, 24 touchdowns, six interceptions) and receiver John Minardi (42 catches, 24.8 yards per catch).

It was a good year for running backs. Right behind Newman was Newport Harbor’s Ray Ohrel (2,095 yards), one of only four to top 2,000 yards.

Irvine’s victory over El Toro in the final week of the season ensured the Vaqueros a playoff spot, but they were eliminated in the first round despite scoring on their first five possessions. The decisive blow? A quarterback sneak, capping an 89-yard drive, with 1 minute 9 seconds left in a 34-31 loss to Loara.

El Toro was the division’s at-large playoff team but lost a second-round shootout to Servite, 47-34.
