Defense Keys Victory for Sunny Hills

Sunny Hills’ defense overwhelmed previously undefeated Brea Olinda, 19-0, Friday night.

The Lancers dropped the Wildcats for a net minus seven yards in remaining undefeated.

So overwhelming was the Sunny Hills defense that Brea Olinda had only three first downs, an 11-yard pass completion, a penalty and a 34-yard run on a fake punt by Scott Davis late in the fourth quarter.

Guy Porter led the Sunny Hills defensive attack with five quarterback sacks for 13, 14, 15, 10 and eight yards. The Wildcats finished with two pass completions for 19 yards.

Brea Olinda (2-1) entered the game with a pair of shutouts, but the Lancers ended the scoreless streak with a 93-yard, 12-play touchdown drive which took more than seven minutes.

Adam Rodriguez scored from the one with 7:10 left in the second quarter. Jared Bruce had three of his six completions in the game during the drive.

Sunny Hills (3-0) scored on a 92-yard drive to open the second half. The drive took only two plays as Kevin Haiola took a quick handoff, broke over left guard and ran 90 yards for the score. The extra point try failed, giving the Lancers a 13-0 lead.

A 44-yard pass from Bruce to Grady Funk set up the final Sunny Hills touchdown.

Rodriguez scored from the one on fourth down with 5:29 remaining in the game.

Haiola finished with 12 carries for 165 yards.

Funk caught five of Bruce’s six completions for 81 yards.

The only highlight for the Wildcats was the punting by Davis, who had four punts of over 45 yards, including one for 59.

Brea had the first scoring threat in the first quarter after a bad snap on a punt gave the Wildcats the ball on the Lancer 30.

Two plays later, Greg Tucker recovered Eric Albrecht’s fumble on the 29 to end the only Brea scoring opportunity.
