Linzey’s Late Field Goal Gives Calvary Chapel Tie With Estancia
John Linzey’s 32-yard field goal with 3 minutes 13 seconds remaining gave Calvary Chapel a 22-22 tie with Estancia in a nonleague game Friday night at Newport Harbor High.
Estancia (1-1-1) had taken a three-point lead earlier in the quarter on James Dawkins’ 54-yard touchdown run.
Calvary Chapel (2-0-1), which went winless last season, scored first on Dan Murietta’s 69-yard touchdown pass to Luke Clardy in the first quarter.
Estancia then answered on Jeff Thompson’s one-yard touchdown run. After Estancia snapped the ball out of the end zone for a safety, Calvary Chapel added to its lead on Linzey’s 20-yard field goal and a 25-yard touchdown run by Keith Short.
Manu Tanielu ran in from four yards and he added a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 19-15.
Short led Calvary Chapel with 108 yards rushing in 11 carries.
Dawkins rushed for 86 yards in 14 carries for Estancia.
