Grant Shows It’s No Fluke, Beats Sylmar Again, 10-0

Billy Karz, Louis Estrada and Danny Schrader each had three hits for Grant High in a 10-0 defeat of Sylmar in an East Valley League baseball game Wednesday at Grant. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Grant (8-13, 7-5) scored its second victory this week over Sylmar (16-5, 10-2), the No. 8-ranked team in The Times’ regional poll.

Mike Marble (3-2) pitched a six-hitter and had two hits and a run batted in.

Marble’s run-scoring single in the fifth inning made it 9-0 and Karz doubled home Jon Spielvogel to end the game.

It was the third RBI of the game for Karz, who hit a solo home run in the third inning.

North Hollywood 6, Poly 4--Ismael Rangsiyawong hit his seventh home run to help the Huskies (13-9-1, 9-1-1) win an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Poly scored three runs in the seventh and had the tying run on second base with two out before North Hollywood’s Jose Figueroa got Mark Castardo to ground out.

John Manuel had two doubles and an RBI for Poly (12-5-2, 7-3-2).

Monroe 11, Canoga Park 0--John Ennis pitched a no-hitter and had three hits for the Vikings (11-11-1, 6-6) in a Mid-Valley League game that lasted five innings because of the 10-run rule at Monroe.

Ennis (5-3) had eight strikeouts and hit two doubles.

Victor Hall and Ray Gonzalez each had two hits for Monroe.

Channel Islands 6, Thousand Oaks 2--Eric Rodriguez (1-2) pitched a six-hitter with five strikeouts and had two doubles to help the Raiders win a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Joe Garcia hit a two-run home run for the Raiders (6-13, 2-7).

John Smith hit a solo home run for Thousand Oaks (13-7-1, 4-4-1).

Westlake 7, Newbury Park 6--Kevin Howard’s three-run double with one out in the sixth broke a 4-4 tie, and the Warriors (11-7, 5-3) held on in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Simi Valley 4, Agoura 3--Andy Karp and Brandon Voorhees each had a run-scoring double and a single for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League victory at Agoura (12-7-1, 3-4-1).

Tim Say (5-1) pitched a six-hitter for Simi Valley (10-9, 3-5), striking out three.

Oxnard 12, Buena 8--Mario Castro, Omari Parker and Matt Adams each had two hits for the victorious Yellowjackets (8-7-1, 2-5-1) in a Channel League game at Oxnard.

Castro’s solo home run in the second inning put Oxnard (8-7-1, 2-5-1) ahead to stay, 4-3.

Palmdale 11, Antelope Valley 0--Jason Gorman pitched a two-hitter for the Falcons in a Golden League victory at Antelope Valley that was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Gorman (5-0) had six strikeouts and three hits, including a two-run home run.

Highland 22, Quartz Hill 11--Rob Cowan, John Santor, Jon Anello, Jasan Kubel and Shaun Gerstl hit home runs to help the Bulldogs win a Golden League game stopped after five innings.

J.P. Schmidt tripled and doubled for Highland (11-8, 6-3).

Lancaster 13, Littlerock 11--Eric Sunberg had three doubles and two RBIs for the Eagles (10-7, 3-6) in a Golden League victory at Littlerock (6-12, 1-8).

Alan Squyres had a solo home run and a run-scoring double for Lancaster, while Dereck Anderson had a solo home run and two doubles for Littlerock.
