Ventura 66, Hueneme 49--Senior Jeff Staniland of Ventura hit 13 of 17 shots and nine of nine free throws to score 35 points in the season opener at Hueneme.

Staniland, who averaged 21 points a game last season, scored 13 points in the first quarter.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 69, Compton 63--Sophomore Richelle Sherman scored eight of her 25 points in overtime for the Huskies (2-0) in pool play of the Washington tournament.

Sherman, a 6-foot-1 center, tied the score, 56-56, on a follow shot with 12 seconds left in regulation.

Sherman had 12 rebounds for North Hollywood, which will play El Camino Real in a semifinal at 4 p.m. today.

El Camino Real 65, Locke 59--Sophomore Christina Aguinaga, who was academically ineligible last season, scored 14 of her 25 points in the second quarter for the Conquistadores (2-0) in pool play of the Washington tournament.

Aguinaga was seven of seven from the field in the second quarter and 11 of 17 for the game.

Center Karen Shun made seven of eight shots and scored 15 points for El Camino Real.

Highland 46, Sultana 34--Lamarra Burleson came off the bench and scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half for Highland (1-0) after sitting out most of the first half of the nonleague game at Sultana.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Birmingham 1, Cleveland 0--Jonathan Moreno converted a penalty kick with eight minutes to play in a season and Northwest Valley Conference opener at Cleveland. Birmingham outshot Cleveland, 14-7.

El Camino Real 3, Kennedy 1--Jimmy Choto and Tony Sangari scored in the first half of a Northwest Valley Conference opener to help the Conquistadores run their home conference unbeaten string to 20 games.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Canyon 2, Birmingham 1--Freshman Natalie Sozio scored two goals in her high school debut in a season opener at Birmingham.

Junior Brenda Cornejo had assists on each of Sozio’s goals.

Verdugo Hills 2, Franklin 1--Luz Sanchez kicked in a rebound in the goalbox in the 60th minute to lift the Dons (1-0) in a Northeast League opener at Franklin.
