Chaminade Makes It Long Night for Crespi

Scott Long scored 27 points and Chaminade High defeated Crespi, 72-60, in a Mission League boys’ basketball game Wednesday night at Chaminade.

Long also had 10 rebounds for the Eagles (14-1, 3-0 in league play), ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times.

Pat Casella scored 20 points for Crespi (8-9, 1-3), which trailed at halftime, 38-23.

In other boys’ games:

Montclair Prep 57, Rolling Hills Prep 47--Rocky Steryo scored 10 of his 22 points the fourth quarter, when the Mounties (15-3) went on a 19-2 run to secure a nonleague victory at Montclair Prep.

North Hollywood 72, Poly 68--Keron Wilkerson scored six of his season-high 40 points in overtime, and the Huskies (11-6) held off the Parrots in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at North Hollywood.

Grant 66, Reseda 58--Foul trouble and the Regents’ diamond-and-one defense limited high-scoring Gilbert Arenas to 12 points, but the Lancers (10-6) jumped to an 11-0 lead and held on in a Valley Pac-8 conference opener at Grant.

Rio Mesa 71, Buena 63--Robert Hernandez scored 17 points for the Spartans in a Channel League game at Buena.

Ryan Fay scored 36 points for Buena (3-14, 0-5).

Taft 76, Granada Hills 66--Harold Shevlin had 22 points and Amir Bar-Netzer had 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Toreadors (8-3, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Taft.

Birmingham 59, Chatsworth 52--Jerome Riley of Birmingham (11-4, 1-0), who had seven steals, intercepted an inbounds pass by Chatsworth and converted a layup with less than a minute left to secure a 58-52 lead in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Harvard-Westlake 67, Alemany 54--Russell Lakey scored 14 of the Wolverines’ 18 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 27 in a Mission League game at Harvard-Westlake.

La Canada 62, Blair 52--Matt Moore scored 20 of his 33 points in the second and third quarters and Ian Sullivan hit six three-point shots en route to 18 points for the Spartans (15-4, 2-0) in a Rio Hondo League game at La Canada.

Bell-Jeff 81, St. Genevieve 48--Mike West had 30 points and 26 rebounds and Ruben Douglas, who did not score in the first quarter, finished with 33 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Guards (9-8, 2-2) in a Santa Fe League game at Bell-Jeff.

Douglas arrived late and was benched to start the game.

GIRLS

Grant 45, Sylmar 43--Angela Terry made two free throws with 26 seconds left to give the Lancers (12-3, 1-0) a victory in overtime in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Thousand Oaks 53, Channel Islands 47--Liz Nesbitt scored 21 points for the Lancers (9-4, 4-1) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Granada Hills 54, Taft 52--Lindy Gayton hit two free throws in the final minute to give the Highlanders (7-3, 1-0) the victory in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.

North Hollywood 72, Poly 30--Markia Derby scored 16 points for the Huskies (15-1, 1-0), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Poly.

El Camino Real 76, San Fernando 38--Cara Blumfield scored 26 points for the Conquistadores in a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real.

Cleveland 52, Kennedy 31--LaShanda Smiley had 18 points and 20 rebounds and Joann Ov added 11 rebounds for the host Cavaliers (8-3, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
