Same Old Story for Chaminade

Three weeks ago, the Notre Dame High girls’ soccer team was blown off the field by Mission League rival Chaminade, losing a league opener by three goals.

Thursday was the rematch, and although Notre Dame outworked and at times outplayed the Eagles, the end result was the same in a 2-1 setback at Chaminade.

The Eagles (18-2-1, 5-1 in league play) got two Michelle French goals and built a 2-0 lead early in the second half before allowing the Knights (11-3-3, 2-3-1) to score in the 62nd minute.

“I thought we were just as good as they were today, they just got more goals,” Notre Dame midfielder Sarah Morgan said.

Chaminade Coach Mike Evans, whose team is closing in on its second consecutive league title and its third in the past four seasons, saw things differently.

“I didn’t think [Notre Dame was] ever a threat,” he said. “We’re 8-0 against them in the last eight games, that’s my only concern.”

Chaminade’s first goal, in the 28th minute, came after a Knight defender passed back to goalkeeper Cheryl Acosta, whose weak clearing attempt was intercepted by the Eagles’ Mindy Wyatt.

Wyatt passed ahead to French, who raced in alone on Acosta and scored from five yards.

A minute after halftime, a Wyatt kick bounced off the hands of Acosta and fell to French, who tapped it in from close range. Notre Dame’s Melissa Rubey scored 21 minutes later off a pass from Tiffany Thompson.

Birmingham 8, Canoga Park 0--Nuria Venegas and Tiffany Williams each had a hat trick for Birmingham (11-2-1, 6-0) in a West Valley League game at home.

Ventura 2, Rio Mesa 1--Mandy Enfield scored twice in the first half--both on passes from Lindsay Shull--in a Channel League game at Ventura (12-8, 7-3).

Kennedy 7, San Fernando 0--Brigette Macias and Jennifer Bernson each scored three goals for Kennedy (9-1-5, 4-2) in a West Valley League home game.

Cleveland 6, Sherman Oaks CES 1--Julie Munjack scored two goals to lead Cleveland (13-4, 5-1) in a West Valley League game at Sherman Oaks CES.

Louisville 1, Alemany 1--Melissa Ireland scored off a rebound midway through the second half to give Louisville (6-4-5, 1-1-4) a tie in a Mission League game at Alemany.

Kristen Frawley gave the Indians (6-6-5, 2-1-3) the lead with a goal 20 minutes into the first half.

Quartz Hill 4, Antelope Valley 0--Julie Gold had two goals for the Rebels (11-4-2, 5-0-1) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Reseda 2, Grant 0--Rocky Monzon scored a pair of second-half goals, converting a penalty kick for the first one and hitting a five-yard shot for the second, in the Valley Pac-8 conference game at Grant (0-6-3, 0-2-2).

Hector Romero, who usually plays stopper, saw his first action at goalkeeper and made three saves for Reseda.

Van Nuys 2, Sylmar 2--Victor Reyes and Christian Guare of Van Nuys scored second-half goals to break a scoreless tie, but Sylmar’s Jaime Castellano and Noel Sanchez rallied the Spartans back into a tie in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Van Nuys.

Poly 1, Monroe 0--Alvaro Rosas scored unassisted for Poly (6-1-3, 6-1-3) from 16 yards in the 10th minute of a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Monroe (9-4-3, 6-2-2).

Buena 2, Oxnard 0--Buena (12-2-4, 6-1-2) was held scoreless for more than 50 minutes, before Mike Bradbury and Chad Sautter scored in a 10-minute span in the second half of a Channel League game at Oxnard (4-10-3, 1-8-1).

Rio Mesa 3, Ventura 1--David Cervantes’ 22nd goal in 17 games broke a 1-1 tie in the 30th minute for the Spartans (12-5-3, 4-4-2) in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

La Canada 15, Burroughs 9--Becky Johan and Julia Pereya each scored four goals for La Canada (15-5, 2-2) in a Mission League game at La Canada.

WRESTLING

El Camino Real 66, Monroe 7--El Camino Real’s Edward Lemus, Arthur Lucero, Keith Thomas and Eugene Korchmarev each pinned his opponent in less than two minutes in a Valley League match at El Camino Real.

San Fernando 59, Chatsworth 16--Jaime Reyes pinned his opponent in 58 seconds for San Fernando (10-3, 3-0) in a City Section home match.
