‘Real’ Alemany Surfaces in Stunner Over St. Paul

Alemany High was supposed to struggle beyond belief against St. Paul.

The Indians had surrendered 99 points in their two previous games, both losses, and were facing a team that had outscored opponents, 314-6.

But Alemany held St. Paul’s power ground game to 82 yards and beat the previously undefeated Swordsmen, 26-17, in a Mission League opener.

“The real Alemany team showed up on Friday night,” Coach Jim Bonds said. “We know we have a pretty potent offense and I think we still have a pretty good team.”

The Indians (5-3) picked up the pieces after consecutive losses to Loyola, 60-20, and to Harvard-Westlake, 39-37.

He came, he saw his old football field, he left with a victory.

St. Francis Coach Bill Redell returned to the scene of some of his greatest coaching victories last week at Crespi and beat his old team, 28-10, in a Mission League opener.

St. Francis (5-3), which hosts St. Paul (7-1) on Saturday night, has a shot at winning the four-team Mission League.

“It was a clutch game, and there’s not many games in this league,” Redell said. “It was a rewarding win.”

Ryan Davey, starting defensive end and sack leader for Canyon, and teammate Gabe Leija, starting offensive tackle, will play Friday against Valencia after sitting out last week’s game against Burroughs because of disciplinary reasons.

Canyon Coach Larry Mohr said his team is at full strength for the first time since the second game of the season, a 17-0 victory over Highland.

At 6 feet 6 and 295 pounds, Justin Brown can put the hurt on opponents.

Teammates aren’t always safe, either.

The Chaminade offensive tackle broke the left little toe of teammate Ken Paterka on the fourth play of the Eagles’ 24-7 Mission League victory over Serra last week.

Paterka, an offensive guard, had his toe crushed when Brown stepped on it.

“We always tell Justin to keep his feet moving,” Chaminade Coach Ed Croson said.

Chasio Gaines of Antelope Valley will have his shoulder examined by a doctor Wednesday to decide whether he needs surgery.

The senior defensive back dislocated his left shoulder Friday in a 23-14 loss to Palmdale. Gaines dislocated the same shoulder Sept. 18 against Sylmar. . . .

Running back Danny Pagnella’s availability for Lancaster’s game against Quartz Hill on Friday won’t be determined until later this week.

Pagnella, the Eagles’ leading rusher with 606 yards, strained his left Achilles and sat out the second half last week in a 17-13 loss to Littlerock.

Two of Sylmar’s best players--Corey Neal and George Wrighster--are questionable for Friday’s game against Reseda after they suffered injuries last week in a 21-7 victory over Canoga Park.
