El Dorado Stops Cypress’ Run

Nancy Sweet had 14 kills and Alexis Cochrane had 51 assists to lead El Dorado to a 9-15, 15-5, 15-13, 15-12 victory over previously unbeaten Cypress in an Empire League match Tuesday night at Cypress High.

El Dorado (13-1, 8-1) had an 8-6 lead in the first game, but Cypress (8-1 in league) stormed back to take the first game, 15-9. The Golden Hawks rallied behind Sweet and Ashli Brown (10 kills), Britney Sylvia and Natalie Green (seven kills) to take the next three games and avenge their only loss of the season, a three-game sweep by Cypress.

The league title will be decided Thursday with El Dorado at home against sixth-place Loara, and Cypress hosting third-place Kennedy.

In other Empire League matches:

Kennedy 3, Katella 1--Kennedy clinched third place in league with a 15-3, 10-15, 15-9, 16-14 victory, led by Cira Wright’s 26 kills.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 0--Allison Bendush led with 12 kills for St. Margaret’s, which won, 15-1, 15-4, 15-7. St. Margaret’s (14-1, 11-0) clinched the league title. In the Freeway League:

La Habra 3, Sunny Hills 1--Kao Burdine led La Habra (13-6, 9-0), which clinched the league title, with 11 kills in a 15-9, 14-6, 15-3, 15-2 victory over Sunny Hills (7-7, 6-3).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Kerry Velton had seven aces and Ami Czarnowski had six kills to lead host Pacifica (11-2, 11-0), which won 15-2, 15-5, 15-3 and clinched the league title.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Magnolia 0--Monika Jackley had 10 kills for host Valencia, which won, 15-5, 15-6, 15-0. The Tigers (12-3, 9-0), clinched their 11th consecutive league title.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 10 Laguna Beach 3, Costa Mesa 1--Kelly Cramm had 13 kills for Laguna Beach (8-6, 6-2), which won 15-4, 12-15, 15-13, 15-6, and finished second place in league.

In the Sea View League:

Irvine 3, Laguna Hills 0--Julianna Bayley had 10 kills and four aces to lead Irvine (9-4, 5-2) with a 15-6, 15-6, 15-8 victory. Jody Carlson had 10 kills and five digs as the Vaqueros clinched second place in league.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 3, Dana Hills 1--Capistrano Valley (17-7, 6-3) clinched at least a share of second place in league with a 15-7, 6-15, 15-13, 15-10 victory. Becky Warnick led the Cougars with 26 kills and Ashley Thometz had 14 kills.

No. 8 San Clemente 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Kimberly Noble had 11 kills and seven aces to lead league-champion San Clemente (10-5, 8-1). Christine Bronson had six kills for Trabuco Hills (6-9, 2-7).

In the Sunset League:

No. 4 Esperanza 3, Marina 1--Tony Anderson had 41 assists and Mindy Chuha and Kristen Thompson had eight kills each to lead visiting Esperanza (14-1, 8-1), which won 15-1, 15-4, 12-15, 15-5. The Aztecs go into their final league match tied for first with Huntington Beach at 8-1.

No. 7 Huntington Beach 3, Los Alamitos 0--Fourth ranked in Southern Section Division I-A Huntington Beach (13-4, 8-1) won 15-12, 15-11, 15-13. Los Alamitos dropped to 15-8, 5-4 in league.
