El Toro Wins Tournament on Late Goal

Richie Schwanbeck took a pass from Tim Craycraft and scored with 39 seconds left to give third-ranked El Toro a 7-6 victory over No. 5 Villa Park in the championship game of the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament Saturday.
Schwanbeck drew an ejection on a Villa Park player and scored one second later against the shorthanded Spartans. Trevor McMunn stole the ball with 29 seconds left to help El Toro run out the clock to secure the victory.
Villa Park took a 6-5 lead in the fourth quarter on Shane Joffe’s goal with 4:39 left, but El Toro answered with a goal from Schwanbeck 35 seconds later. Joffe scored two goals to lead the Spartans (9-3).
Brad Burnett and Craycraft, the tournament’s most valuable player, each scored two goals for the Chargers (13-3). It was the second tournament victory of the season for El Toro, which has accomplished that feat only one other time, in 1992.
In the semifinals, Brent McCleave scored five goals to lead the Chargers to a 10-5 victory over Santa Maria Righetti.
Villa Park defeated La Jolla Bishop’s, 10-3, in the other semifinal.
In other tournament games:
Saddleback 12, Carlsbad 4--Julian Gonzalez scored three goals to help Saddleback (7-2) finish ninth.
In nonleague water polo:
Long Beach Wilson 7, Corona del Mar 5--Garrett Gentry scored two goals for Corona del Mar, which is ranked second in Southern Section Division II. Wilson is ranked second in Division I.
In the Nike Challenge girls’ volleyball tournament:
Lexington (Ky.) Assumption 2, Newport Harbor 1--Newport Harbor lost in the championship match at Chicago, 5-15, 15-4, 15-10. It was the first defeat for the Sailors since losing to Cerritos Valley Christian in the title match of the Orange County Championships last season.
April Ross had 13 kills against Assumption, the top-ranked team in Kentucky.
