Santa Ana Sweeps Golden Gate Titles

Jose Herrera ran four miles in 19 minutes 30 seconds to take the top spot out of 232 runners and lead Santa Ana to a first-place finish at the Golden Gate cross-country invitational in San Francisco Saturday.
Alfonso Leon placed second for Santa Ana in 19:37.
The Dons finished with 57 points, edging second-place Sequoias, which had 60. West Valley was third with 150.
Santa Ana also came away with first place in the women’s competition. The Dons’ top finishers for 3.2 miles were Monica Martinez, who placed seventh in 19:56, and Cristal Hernandez, who took ninth in 20:06.
Santa Ana’s 60 points allowed it to easily defeat Moorpark (103 points). Fresno finished third with 156.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
Golden West 3, Sacramento 1--Natalie Snowden had 15 kills and Julie Renfrow had 10 to lead the Rustlers to a 15-2, 15-6, 12-15, 15-10 victory.
Golden West 3, Sequoias 0--Grace Boyd had 10 kills for Golden West (6-0), which won, 15-5, 15-1, 15-2.
In the Cuesta women’s water polo tournament final:
Golden West 2, Sierra 2--Chelsea Rowlands and Meghan O’Donnell scored goals in the third quarter to give the Rustlers a 2-1 lead, but Sierra got a shot past Golden West goalkeeper Stephanie Lombardo with two seconds left in the fourth quarter to win a share of the championship. Lombardo, who entered the game in the second half, made three saves. Starting goalie Amber Zering also made three for the Rustlers.
