Channel Islands, which had a 7-52-1 record in league play in the first nine seasons of the decade, surprised many with its victory over Rio Mesa, but not Coach Jack Willard.

“We felt that this team had come closer and closer together as a team in the last couple of weeks,” Willard said. “We told the players that we have a better team than most people think, but people are not going to start respecting you until you start putting up some marks in that left-hand column.”
