St. Bonaventure (3-0) is on a roll, and the Seraphs should get even better with age.

Seven sophomores saw significant playing time Friday night in the Seraphs’ 25-7 victory over Nordhoff, and four stood out.

Matt White, a 5-11, 188-pound outside linebacker, intercepted a pass and returned it 21 yards.

White and defensive tackle Jon Bednarski (6 feet, 206) helped St. Bonaventure turn in what Jon Mack called the best defensive first half in his 10 seasons as coach.

The Seraphs limited Nordhoff to one first down and 28 yards in the first half. The Rangers finished with 110 yards.

Brandon Mascorro, who was the most valuable player on St. Bonaventure’s junior varsity last season, played well at flanker and defensive back. He had three catches for 46 yards and one touchdown.

Lorenzo Booker led the Seraphs in rushing for the third consecutive game, gaining a season-high 182 yards in 27 carries.

“It’s just a great class,” Mack said of the sophomores.

As injury-delayed debuts go, the one by Ted Chewning of Fillmore in a 38-16 loss to El Segundo last week wasn’t bad.

Chewning, a senior fullback who rushed for 777 yards and nine touchdowns last season, rushed for 94 yards in 18 carries in his first game since pulling ligaments in his left knee during a preseason scrimmage.

“The coach asked me how I felt right before the game and I said let’s give it a try,” Chewning said. “I didn’t plan on playing that much, but I was surprised it was as good as it was.”

The surprise was a pleasant one.

“The first two games, I didn’t like sitting there, watching,” he said. “I wanted to be out there.”

Fillmore (2-1) failed to win its third consecutive game, something the Flashes haven’t done since 1990.

Instead, the Flashes’ past failures against the pass came back to haunt them.

Fillmore was outscored, 104-42, last season by L.A. Baptist, St. Bonaventure and Bishop Diego--teams that favor the passing game.

“Historically, we don’t do well against teams that pass a lot,” Coach Matt Suttle of Fillmore said.

The Flashes were burned by quarterback Ryan Gilbert of El Segundo, who completed 14 of 23 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns.

“We just played terrible,” Suttle said. “Everything was blown coverages and big plays.”

If Fillmore rebounds from the loss to El Segundo, it first must rebound from the flu.

Quarterback Kyle McDowell and tight end-defensive end Paul Naumes left practice early Monday and are questionable for a game against L.A. Baptist on Friday night.
