Rustlers Cruise to Victory in State Volleyball Playoffs

Golden West defeated Cabrillo in three games Friday in the first round of the women’s volleyball state tournament at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.

Sarah Boogaard had 12 kills to lead the Rustlers in their 15-1, 15-3, 15-7 victory.

Golden West will play Moorpark in the quarterfinals at noon today.

In the state wrestling championships:

Rustlers in seventh--Golden West is in seventh place after the first day of competition at Golden West.

The Rustlers scored 37.8 points after three rounds. Fresno, which won the title in 1998, leads with 69.2. Santa Ana is in 14th and Cypress is in 16th.

Jack Anaya of Cypress and Andrew Donaldson of Santa Ana were the only county wrestlers to advance to today’s semifinal round.

Anaya, formerly of Valencia High, won his 125-pound match, pinning Golden West’s Jesse Miramontes in 6 minutes 37 seconds. Donaldson, a former Capistrano Valley High standout, defeated George Smith of Skyline, 3-0.

Competition continues at 10 a.m. today with the semifinals and third-round consolation matches. Championship finals are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

In the Orange Coast men’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 60, Cuyamaca 58--D. Jay Lucas had 17 points, six rebounds and two steals, Adam Rachlin had 11 points and Jason Edwards had 10 points for Cypress, which trailed, 31-28, at halftime.

In the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 80, Hancock 51--Kristen Urban made four three-pointers and had 16 points, Karyn Fierst and Jenny Nakano each had 13 points and Nadia Mojica had eight points and 11 rebounds for host Orange Coast, which led, 47-20, at halftime. Orange Coast will play Bakersfield or Cuesta in the championship game at 4 p.m. today.

In the Pasadena tournament:

Saddleback 70, Citrus 36--Kalena Jackson scored 30 points, making four of six three-pointers for Saddleback, which plays Long Beach at 3 p.m. today in the consolation final. Colleen O’Leary had 19 points for Saddleback (3-4), which lost to Pasadena, 58-53, in the first round.
