Rivera’s 40-Yarder Sparks Cougars

Freddy Rivera scored five minutes into the game and Jeff Serafini had a goal on a penalty kick 25 minutes later as Capistrano Valley, ranked sixth in Orange County, beat Foothill, 2-0, Wednesday in the second round of the Trabuco Hills boys’ soccer tournament.

Rivera’s goal came off a shot from 40 yards, beating Foothill goalkeeper Brandon Shaver and falling just under the top crossbar for a 1-0 lead.

Earlier, the Cougars beat Burbank Burroughs, 2-0, as John Fincher scored both goals.

Capistrano Valley goalkeeper Zach Mikelson made four saves against Foothill and three against Burroughs to record his sixth and seventh shutouts of the season.

In other tournament games:

Woodbridge takes two--The county’s second-ranked team received goals from different players in defeating El Camino, 3-1, and Saddleback, 3-0. Junior forward Roy Chingarian had four assists in two games for Woodbridge (7-1-2), which plays El Toro today at 2 p.m.

In the Lompoc tournament:

Laguna Hills sweeps--Laguna Hills, the top-seeded team in the tournament, shut out both San Luis Obispo 0 and Santa Maria, 3-0, to advance to the semifinals today at Lompoc High.

Paul Jimenez had a goal against San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria to lead the Hawks. Brandon Olson, who was brought up from junior varsity to fill in for the Hawks’ injured goalkeeper had 12 saves in the two wins.

Laguna Hills (6-2-4) plays Santa Ynez today at 10 a.m.

In the Montclair tournament:

Valencia 3, Pomona 1--Jose Ventura stole the ball and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one in the 55th minute for the decisive goal. Carlos Placentia and Luis Perez also scored, and Scott Mazurier had nine saves for Valencia (5-3).

In the Oceanside tournament:

Servite 1, San Digueto Academy 0--Matt Willis scored off an assist from Jeff Murphy in the 50th minute.

In the San Dimas tournament:

Brea Olinda 1, Lynwood 1 (Brea advanced on penalty kicks, 9-8)--Brandon Young scored the final penalty kick to give Brea Olinda the semifinal win. Kory Felix scored Brea’s lone goal in the 25th minute to tie it, 1-1. Brea Olinda will face Whittier in today’s final.
