Sunset Is Top League in Soccer
Through the first month of the season, the Sunset and Serra emerged as the county’s dominant boys’ soccer leagues. When the new rankings come out Tuesday, the Sunset League figures to have three of the county’s top five teams in Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Edison. One coach called the Sunset “the toughest league in the country.” On Wednesday, the dogfight for the league’s three automatic playoff berths begins with once-beaten Edison traveling to undefeated Huntington Beach and once-beaten Fountain Valley visiting Esperanza, the preseason favorite.
The four-team Serra League, which begins play next week, will probably have three of the county’s top 10 in Santa Margarita, Mater Dei and Servite. Butonly the top two finishers will get automatic berths in the playoffs.
