Calvary Chapel Advances in Virginia

Calvary Chapel won its first two dual meets Friday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Virginia Wrestling Duals in Hampton, Va.

The Eagles, seeded first in the 16-team national division, had little trouble with North Stafford (Va.), winning, 49-19, in the first meet.

Calvary Chapel, ranked ninth in the nation and first in California, then defeated Christiansburg (Va.), 49-18, in the second round.

Tony Aparicio, ranked first in the county at 140 pounds, won both of his matches, pinning Branden Scott of North Stafford in 39 seconds and Rodney Andrews of Christiansburg in 17 seconds.

Calvary Chapel meets Camden (N.J.) Catholic today.

In Academy League girls’ basketball:

Capistrano Valley Christian 72, Southern California Christian 21--Guard Bethany Thom had 30 points, seven rebounds and six steals for host Capistrano Valley Christian (9-4, 2-0).

In the Century League:

No. 5 Foothill 59, Villa Park 41--Kristen Mann scored 25 points and Chavaughn Brown added 15 for Foothill (9-4, 1-0). Liesl Bielefeld and Lauren Yadon each scored 13 points for host Villa Park (8-9, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 49, Fullerton 34--Valerie Martinez led La Habra (8-9, 1-0) with 13 points, including three three-pointers.

No. 2 Troy 57, Sonora 38--Veronica Johns-Richardson scored 21 points for host Troy (12-3, 1-0), including five three-point baskets. Teammate Katie Hardeman added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 56, Los Amigos 49--Gloria Rojas scored 29 points for host Garden Grove (6-10, 2-0).

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Saddleback Valley Christian 55, Calvary Baptist 22--Danielle Harbin had 34 points and six rebounds for Saddleback Valley Christian (8-0).

In Sea View League girls’ soccer:

No. 2 Woodbridge 1, Laguna Hills 1--Emily Schwimmer scored a second-half goal to salvage the tie for host Woodbridge (7-2-1, 0-0-1).

Jamie Lautenschlager scored for Laguna Hills (8-3-3, 0-0-1).

In the Newport Harbor girls’ water polo tournament:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 7, No. 6 Capistrano Valley 3--Kyndra Cox scored three goals and Katherine Belden scored two for Newport Harbor in a second-round game.

Capistrano Valley was held scoreless in the second half, when the Sailors made the majority of their 12 steals.

In a first-round game earlier in the day, Newport Harbor got two goals each from four players in an 11-3 victory over Palos Verdes Peninsula.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Irvine 7, Long Beach Wilson 4--Agnus Prawdzik, Sarah Hamilton and Kristi Riedel scored two goals each to lead host Irvine (7-1), which used a four-goal third period to break open a tight game.

No. 9 Rosary 11, Katella 6--Natalie Golda scored five goals and Mallory Anderson had four for Rosary.
