Pepperdine Signs Two More Prospects

Coach Jan van Breda Kolff of Pepperdine has signed two more basketball players to letters of intent.

Terrance Johnson, a 6-5 guard-forward from Duncanville High in Dallas, and Glen McGowan, a 6-8 forward from Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass., join four other players who have signed with the Waves.

Johnson was the Texas 5-A most valuable offensive player, averaging 15.0 points and 8.0 rebounds.

McGowan played three seasons at Venice High, scoring 29.0 points, second best in the state, and earning All-City honors as a junior. He averaged 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds at Notre Dame Prep.

The Waves have signed 6-4 guard Michael Hall and 6-9 forward-center Will Kimble of San Bernardino Pacific, 6-9 guard-forward Robert Turner of Anaheim Western and 6-3 guard Micah McKinney of Compton Dominguez.

* Lyn Boop of Highland High has been fired as coach for breaking Antelope Valley school district policy.

Boop allowed a player to drive a school van to pick up an assistant coach on the way to the Rancho Verde tournament in Moreno Valley on June 16. District policy prohibits students from driving school vans with other students on board.

Boop, who guided the Bulldogs to 12-14 records each of the last two seasons, will remain a physical education teacher.

A replacement for Boop has not been selected. Cary Johnson, freshman basketball coach, has been appointed interim coach.

GOLF

* Hana Kim of Encino defeated Helga Rut Svanbergsdottir, 4 and 3, on Friday to help the United States score a 26 1/2-17 1/2 victory over Scandinavia in the Izzo Cup Junior matches at Ullna Golf Club in Stockholm.

Kim, a recent graduate of Brentwood High, had a 2-1-1 record during the three-day competition.

BASEBALL

* Frank Mutz, who played at Granada Hills High and The Master’s College, and has served as a scout, coach and agent, has been named coach at Westlake Village’s Oaks Christian High.

Mutz played for almost four years in the Angel organization and has coached at the college and professional level.

RODEO

* Sam Swan of Ojai won the California high school bronc riding championship and Joaquin Real of Ojai was fourth in Red Bluff, Calif., last weekend.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Cal State Northridge volunteer assistant coach Avery Anderson won three events Friday and scored 4,202 points in the first day of the decathlon Olympic Trials qualifier at Northridge.

Anderson clocked 10.78 seconds to win the 100 meters, leaped 6-10 3/4 to win the high jump and captured the long jump at 24-3 3/4. He is on pace to score more than 8,000 points. A score of 7,900 or better is needed to qualify for the Olympic trials in Sacramento July 14-23.

MOTORSPORTS

* Bryan Herta of Valencia averaged 129.826 mph in Friday’s provisional qualifying session for the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland CART series race scheduled for Sunday.

Herta’s clocking put him 13th on the starting grid, with final qualifications scheduled today.
