Harvard-Westlake Seeded No. 2 in Boys’ Tennis Playoffs

Harvard-Westlake, Crespi, Westlake and Calabasas highs drew the highest seedings among boys’ tennis teams in the region for the Southern Section playoffs.

Harvard-Westlake (21-3-1) is seeded No. 2 behind Peninsula in the 32-team Division I playoffs and will meet Oxnard in a first-round match Tuesday at Studio City Golf and Tennis. Peninsula has beaten the Wolverines twice this season.

Westlake (16-0), the only unbeaten team in the region, is top-seeded in Division III. The Warriors, division runners-up last season, will play at-large entry Placentia Valencia on Tuesday.

Calabasas (13-5), seeded No. 4 in Division IV, hosts Mountain View. Top-seeded Crespi (16-4) drew a first-round bye in Division V.

Wild-card matches are Friday, when Valencia plays at Palmdale in Division II.

BASEBALL

* Pitcher Jack Cassel of Pierce College signed with UC Santa Barbara. Cassel, who pitched at Kennedy High and played at Loyola Marymount as a freshman, is 7-2 and helped lead the Brahmas to the Western State Conference Southern Division title.

* Brendan Ryan, second baseman at Notre Dame High, committed to Lewis-Clark State, an NAIA school in Lewiston, Idaho.

BASKETBALL

* Four Moorpark College men’s basketball players committed to four-year schools.

Center Kenny Plummer signed with Montana State and guard Dan Galvanoni signed with Fairfield (Conn.) University.

Point guard O.J. Thomas, from Channel Islands High, signed with Metro State in Denver, the Division II national champion, and forward-guard Alan Case signed with Cal State Chico.

* The Valley-based American Roundball Corp. 14-and-under team won the AAU Southern Pacific regional tournament in Moreno Valley with a 73-59 victory over IASAA All-Stars on Sunday.

ARC qualified for the AAU national tournament July 30-Aug. 6 in Orlando, Fla.

FOOTBALL

* Offensive lineman Mike Kohr of Camarillo High committed to Ohio Wesleyan.

SOCCER

* The Valley-based L.A. Force won the Southern California State Cup girls’ under-18 tournament with a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Surf on Sunday.

Jenna Wirtz of Westlake High converted a penalty kick with 20 minutes to play.

WEIGHTLIFTING

* Rio Mesa had six champions and finished second to Santa Maria Righetti, 133-109, in the third Rio Mesa High powerlifting tournament on Saturday.

Ben Lopez, a Rio Mesa junior who won the 195-pound division with a combined three-lift total of 1,010 pounds, was selected the upper-weights lifter of the meet. He lifted 5.19 times his body weight.

Charlie Denham, a Righetti junior who won the 165-pound class with combined lifts of 855 pounds, was chosen lower-weights lifter of the meet. He lifted 5.25 times his body weight.

Champions included junior Ray Olivas of Rio Mesa at 145 pounds (710 total weight), junior Michael Norum of Rio Mesa at 155 (730), junior Chauncey LaManche of Rio Mesa at 185 (890), sophomore Mike Dominguez of Rio Mesa at 205 (900), junior Roger Urias of Rio Mesa at 215 (915) and junior Ramiro Ruiz of Hueneme at 225 (1,045).
