Northridge Digs an Early Hole, Fullerton Claims 6-3 Victory

Nick Lovato allowed two hits over five innings and Chris Beck drove in two runs as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal State Northridge, 6-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Fullerton.

Lovato (1-0), who pitched 6 1/3 innings of hitless relief in his college debut against USC last Wednesday, allowed one unearned run, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.

Jake Moon came on in relief in the sixth, walked two batters and hit another before giving way to George Carralejo, who got out of the inning.

Carralejo and Kirk Saarloos scattered four hits over the final four innings for the Titans (35-17).

Beck, Chris Stringfellow and Jake Epstein had two hits each for Fullerton, which led, 6-1, after four innings.

Jason Watkins doubled for one of six hits by the Matadors (23-33), hit a sacrifice fly, stole a base and scored a run.

Starter Mike Rainer (0-1) of Northridge allowed two runs in two inning and Alberto Flores gave up three in the third and one in the fourth.

SOUTHERN SECTION TENNIS

Burbank 9, Loyola 9--Eugene Shin and Min Kang won the last four games at No. 1 doubles to defeat Scott Greenspan and Justin Belisario, 7-5, and lift the Bulldogs to an 83-74 victory on games in a first round Division II match at Burbank.

Tigran Martrosyan, playing at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs (18-2), swept three sets.

Westlake 18, Placentia Valencia 0--Narbe Zoharbe won three singles matches, and freshmen Joshua Kuai and Jackson Ellis swept three doubles matches for the Warriors (17-0) in a Division III opener at Westlake.

Agoura 16, Gahr 2--Tim Mullane swept three matches at No. 2 singles for the Chargers (12-5) in a Division III first-round match at Gahr (13-6).

Harvard-Westlake 18, Oxnard 0--Andrew Rosenfeld swept at No. 1 singles, and Aron Gortman and Alan Haldeman swept at No. 1 doubles for the Wolverines (22-3-1, 12-0) in a Division I first-round victory at Oxnard.

Quartz Hill 10, Righetti 8--Matt Baird and Mike Hurzeler won five consecutive games to defeat Marshall Fargen and Chirag Patel, 6-3, and clinch a Division II first-round victory for the Rebels at Quartz Hill (19-0).

Kyle Hardy swept three sets at No. 1 singles for Righetti (14-4).

St. Bonaventure 11, Northwood 7--John Vigorita swept at No. 1 singles, and Todd Kimsling and Vik Piku swept at No. 1 doubles for the Seraphs (11-4) in a Division V first-round victory at Northwood (8-9).

Campbell Hall 11, Malibu 7--The Vikings, third-place finishers in the Delphic League, won seven of nine doubles sets and upset the Sharks (10-6), the Frontier League co-champions, in a first-round Division V match at Malibu.

Ross Erlich and Michael Shrage swept three sets at No. 1 doubles, dropping only five games for Campbell Hall (10-8).

Adam Zunder won two of three sets at No. 1 singles, including a 6-3 victory over Scott Stewart of Malibu.

Calabasas 18, Mountain View 0--Nick Weiss did not surrender a game at No. 1 singles in a Division IV first-round victory for the Coyotes at Calabasas.

Braden Aftergood and Trevor Hindem swept at No. 1 doubles for the Coyotes (14-5).

Camarillo 11, Glendale 7--J.R. Taylor and Jason Hebert won two of three sets at No. 1 doubles, and Quoc Ly captured two sets at No. 1 singles for the Scorpions (14-5) in a Division I first-round victory at Camarillo.

Robert Yim swept three sets at No. 1 singles for Glendale (13-5).

Rio Mesa 10, Hart 8--Quinn Borchard (37-0) did not surrender a game at No. 1 singles for the Spartans in a Division II first-round victory at Rio Mesa.

Davey Jones swept at No. 2 singles, and Chris Worthington and Thi Nguyen won all three matches at No. 1 doubles for Rio Mesa (17-2).

The Indians finished the season at 12-7.
