Villa Park Topples Wilson in Water Polo

The Villa Park boys’ water polo team scored an 8-5 victory over Long Beach Wilson, top-ranked in the Southern Section Division I, in the quarterfinals of the South Coast tournament Friday at Tustin High.

Charlie Fisher and TJ Matijevich each scored four goals in the first half. Goalkeeper Jared Jones made 10 saves. Villa Park (4-1) is ranked fourth in Division I. Long Beach Wilson is 4-1.

Villa Park hosts Newport Harbor in a semifinal at 9:40 a.m. today.

In other quarterfinal games:

Foothill 9, Corona del Mar 8 (sudden death)--Wes Fox, who finished with three goals, scored the game-winner 20 seconds into the extra period. Blake Benjamin had two goals, four steals and two assists for Foothill. Garrett Bowlus had five goals for Corona del Mar. Foothill plays San Clemente, a 7-5 winner over Los Alamitos, in a semifinal at 11 a.m. at Newport Harbor.

Newport Harbor 12, El Cajon Valhalla 9--Peter Belden, Caine Littrell and Greg Worthington scored three each to lead the Sailors.

In nonleague tennis:

Ocean View 9, Huntington Beach 9 (Ocean View wins in games, 80-73)--Katherine Nguyen and Iris Ma remained undefeated with their victories for host Ocean View (6-0). Huntington Beach is 2-1.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

El Toro 3, Mission Hills Alemany 0--Junior Jennifer Hampton had 32 assists for the host Chargers (3-0), who won, 15-2, 15-5, 15-11.
