Baughman Sparks Cerritos to Victory

Doug Baughman, formerly of Bolsa Grande High, threw for two touchdowns and completed 12 of 29 passes for 185 yards as Cerritos defeated Fullerton, 21-16, in a Mission Conference football game Saturday at Cerritos College.

Fullerton (0-3), despite a plus-seven turnover ratio, lost its third straight game.

Quarterback Jeff Crooks connected for two fourth-quarter touchdowns passes, a 34-yard pass to Kenneth Farley and a 10-yard scoring pass to Jeff Weber.

Sirquon Hardy caught both touchdown passes from Baughman, but it was Darnell Pugh’s six-yard run in the third quarter that gave Cerritos (3-0) the lead for good.

Cerritos, which has been outscored, 32-0, in the fourth quarter this season, has won its three games by a combined total of 10 points. Fullerton has lost its three games by 21.

El Camino 30, Orange Coast 0--Orange Coast (0-3) recovered three El Camino fumbles, but still trailed 10-0 at the half. A 21-yard touchdown in the second half put El Camino ahead by 17. Two touchdowns in the fourth quarter finished the game. Orange Coast quarterback Nick Higgs completed 11 of 32 passes for 195 yards.

Mt. San Antonio 51, Santa Ana 34--Visiting Mt. SAC scored 44 first-half points to deny Dons’ Coach Dave Ogas his 100th career victory.

Jeff Cordova completed 16 of 21 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Keith Hall carried 13 times for 122 yards. Gerald Williams and Joseph Looney had two rushing touchdowns each, and Mt. SAC (3-0) had 542 yards in total offense.

Santa Ana quarterback Grant Wagner was 17 of 28 for 350 yards and two touchdowns, but the Dons running backs managed only 118 yards rushing. Derrick Barnes caught eight passes for 185 yards.

Pasadena 41, Golden West 0--Pasadena (3-0) put the game out of reach with 21 third-quarter points. Pasadena’s two quarterbacks were effective, with Josh Knight completing 11 of 17 for 171 yards and replacement Nathan Chandler connecting on 10 of 21 for 143 yards.

Ten Pasadena runners carried the ball 26 times for 212 yards. Julian Lambert led the charge with 66 yards in three carries and Kenneth Dorsey rushed seven times for 60 yards. Pasadena had 519 yards total offense, while Golden West managed just 78.

Golden West’s Monty Kuresa had just 45 yards in 14 carries and teammate Ricky Quintana carried 11 times for 29 yards. Quarterback Adam Weaver was six for 21 for 39 yards, before being replaced by Brett Gillham, who was two of five for 17 yards.

Riverside 10, Saddleback 7--Host Riverside made 10 second-quarter points stand up, denying Saddleback a shot at its first victory of the season.

Scott Shepard hit Bart Redd with a 16-yard touchdown pass and Mark Baltagi added the extra point and a field goal for Riverside (2-1).

Saddleback (0-3) finally scored in the fourth quarter when Brandon Runk returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown.

In the Orange Coast Cross-Country Classic:

OCC women win--Heather Shurtleff (18:50) and Christine Reimer (19:37) finished first and second as the Pirates (33 points) won the tournament on Fairview Park’s 3.2-mile course.

San Diego Mesa (41) won the men’s division, beating Fullerton (71) and Orange Coast (75) in a four-mile run at Fairview Park.

In the Diablo Valley women’s water polo tournament:

Orange Coast advances--The Pirates (7-2) moved into the semifinals defeating Laney, 19-3, and Foothill, 9-6. Neisha Hoagland had six goals and Daylene Coberly scored five times in the two games. Orange Coast plays Modesto in the semifinals today at noon.
