No. 4 Oilers Defeat No. 3 Sailors

Jennifer Gardikas had 16 kills to lead No. 4 Huntington Beach to a four-game victory over No. 3 Newport Harbor in girls’ volleyball Friday at Newport Harbor.

Lindsay Verhand and Sarina Bountour each had 13 kills for the Oilers (5-2) in the 16-14, 15-12, 12-15, 15-6 victory.

Taylor Govaars had 15 kills for Newport Harbor (1-3).

In other nonleague girls’ volleyball:

No. 8 La Habra 3, Rosary 1--Kristina Baum had nine kills, 18 digs and seven blocks and Lauren Goins had 10 kills for the Highlanders (6-2), who won, 15-8, 15-11, 12-15, 15-3. Marla Smith had 12 kills for Rosary (9-4).

Trabuco Hills 3, Santa Margarita 2--Heather Nicholls had 17 kills, Christine Bronson had 10 and Lisa Wood had 55 assists and five blocks for host Trabuco Hills (3-3) in a 9-15, 7-15, 15-9, 15-7, 18-16 victory.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 3, La Quinta 2--Amy Dabalack had 11 kills for the visiting Matadors (4-5, 1-2), who won, 15-7, 8-15, 9-15, 15-4, 15-4. April Harper had 15 kills and Marissa Linares contributed eight aces for La Quinta (1-6, 1-3).

In nonleague tennis:

No. 3 Troy 14, Capistrano Valley 4--Serena Fermin swept her sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, for the Warriors (5-2). Capistrano Valley is 5-4.

In the Villa Park boys’ water polo tournament:

Villa Park 11, Marina 3--Goalie Jared Jones had a season-high 14 saves for Villa Park. Charlie Fisher and T.J. Matijevich each had three goals to lead the Spartans, who play La Jolla The Bishop’s in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. today.

Simi Valley Royal 7, Esperanza 4--Ramiro Saldain scored six goals for Royal in the quarterfinal. Jamie Burmeister and James Low each scored two goals for Esperanza.

Glendale 12, Canyon 11--Trailing most of the consolation game, the Comanches (5-3) rallied with five fourth-quarter goals and led with less than a minute remaining. Glendale (5-1) rallied and scored the winning goal with three seconds left. Chris Meyer and Jon Pease each had four goals for Canyon.

In nonleague water polo:

Palos Verdes Chadwick 9, Irvine 8--Billy Swanson and Simon Schafer each had three goals for host Irvine (8-5). Goalie Ryan McNab had 15 saves for the Vaqueros.
