Preethi Mukundan of Folsom defeated Alyson Tyson of Agoura Hills, 6-2, 6-2, in a girls’ 18 first-round match.

Samantha Hammond of Westlake Village defeated Camelia Todorova of La Jolla, 6-2, 6-2, in a girls’ 16 second-round match.

SWIMMING

* Todd Irmas, the boys’ and girls’ water polo and swimming coach at Beverly Hills High, has been hired to take over the same programs at Westlake beginning in the fall.

“I’m definitely excited about it,” said the Westlake Village resident. “I’m just looking forward to working with the kids out this way.”

Irmas, 38, replaces walk-on coach Kurt White, who will remain with the program as an assistant.

* Coach Manny Ponce of Alemany High plans to step down at the end of this season to pursue a master’s degree.

Ponce, a 1996 graduate of Alemany, is in his third season. He also resigned as boys’ and girls’ water polo coach.

TENNIS

Chris Gonyer of Louisville, Ky., upset third-seeded Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks, 6-4, 7-5, in a boys’ 18 division first-round match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Easter Bowl Super National Championships on Friday at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

In girls’ 14 second-round play, Celia Durkin of Woodland Hills defeated Jackie Shapiro of Deerfield, Ill., 6-3, 6-1, and Jessica Nguyen of Chatsworth beat Nicole Briceno of Pembrook Pines, Fla., 6-3, 6-1. Mykala Hedberg of Oxnard defeated Austin Hansen of Santa Monica, 6-3, 6-2.

Gary Sacks of Calabasas defeated Benjamin Wiener of Houston, 6-4, 6-2, in the boys’ 14 division.
