Astete Clears Region Record 12-9 1/2 in Girls’ Pole Vault
Melissa Astete of Birmingham High set a region record in the girls’ pole vault Friday, clearing 12-9 1/2 in the Braves’ 111-16 West Valley League victory over El Camino Real at Birmingham.
Astete, who held the previous record of 12-5 1/2, needed one attempt to clear 11-0, 11-6, 12-2 and 12-9 1/2. She narrowly missed a state record 13-3.
Melissa Price of Kingsburgh holds the state outdoor record of 13-1. Astete moved to eighth on the national outdoor list.
HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Hueneme 2, Camarillo 0--Monique Velasquez (4-0) pitched a three-hitter, struck out three and walked none to beat the Scorpions (6-5-1, 3-1 in league play), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times, in a Pacific View League game at Hueneme.
Erica Mijares had three hits for Hueneme (7-2, 3-1).
Coach Nichole Victoria, in her third season with Hueneme, notched her first victory against her alma mater.
Calabasas 8, Santa Clara 0--Freshman Shelly Madick (2-4-1) pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts but lost her bid for a perfect game with a leadoff walk in the fifth inning in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.
Krystle Chamberlain had four hits for Calabasas (2-4-1, 2-0).
Oaks Christian 3, Campbell Hall 0--Ashlee Freeman pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the Lions (10-2-1) in a nonleague victory at Cal Lutheran.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
The Master’s 7, North Central (Ill.) 4--Dereck Smith pitched a three-hitter and Andy Salazar hit a two-run homer for the Mustangs (14-12) at Master’s.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Royal def. Thousand Oaks, 15-9, 15-3, 12-15, 15-5--David Russell had 26 kills for the Highlanders (12-1, 4-0) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.
