Section Looks at League Realignment

Share

The Southern Section council will vote today in Long Beach whether to adopt a league realignment proposal for the 2002-06 school years.

One of the proposals would create a football-only Angelus League, comprising traditional powers La Puente Bishop Amat, Los Angeles Loyola, Santa Ana Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, Anaheim Servite and Bellflower St. John Bosco. Coaches at those schools favor the proposal.

The council also will vote whether to have its constituents recommend proposals at the Oct. 26 state council meeting in San Francisco that would:

* Increase the penalty to two years of athletic ineligibility from one for athletes who are found to have provided school officials with false information regarding their academic history.

* Allow wrestlers to compete in 40 matches before the postseason. Previously, they were limited to a 40-match total, including postseason competitions.

* Allow wrestlers to waive forfeits as part of the 40-match total.

The council also will discuss a statewide proposal that aims to curb the rise in transfers for athletic purposes by requiring school officials to certify that no one connected with schools’ booster clubs or athletic departments had contact with prospective transfers.
