Firefighters Get Partial Control, Protect Groves

The U.S. Forest Service estimated that a forest fire had burned 64,500 acres and was 30% contained by Saturday afternoon.
Fire crews continued to hold a fire line on the west flank of the fire, closest to sequoia groves, and helicopters were dropping water in rugged terrain on the fire’s north front, which was moving slowly toward the Golden Trout Wilderness Area.
Crews also were digging fire lines to the southeast, near Cherry Hill Road and Mosquito Meadows, and east of Sherman Path. Saturday’s weather conditions for firefighting were improved, with cooler temperatures and some humidity, officials said.
About $9.1 million had been spent fighting the fire so far.
