Senior Juan Robles of Placentia Valencia was one of five runners disqualified from the boys’ race of champions in the Great American Cross-Country Festival in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday. But his disqualification for taking a wrong turn that cut about 300 meters off the 5,000-meter course couldn’t lower his confidence.

Robles, the runner-up in the Southern Section Division II championships last year, finished fourth in Charlotte before the disqualifications.

“Juan felt disappointed about being disqualified,” Valencia Coach Patricia Hadley said. “But he also feels good about the race because of the way he ran. He now feels that he can run with just about anybody.”
