Organizers of the Shrine All-Star Football Classic, which is entering its 52nd year, have decided to switch the game format to players from private schools against players from public schools.

The game is scheduled for July 19 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Officials are hoping the new format will generate greater fan interest.

John Barnes of Los Alamitos has agreed to coach the public-school players, with Kiki Mendoza of Bellflower St. John Bosco handling the private-school players.

The game originally matched top players from Southern California against their counterparts from Northern California, then switched to a seven-year run featuring California players against their counterparts from Texas.
