Cameron Has Lead Role in 4-0 Victory

Taylor Cameron pitched a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts and drove in the first two runs to lead Cerritos Valley Christian to a 4-0 victory over Pasadena La Salle in the Southern Section Division V championship baseball game Thursday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

It was the second title in three seasons for the Crusaders (23-10), who outscored five playoff opponents, 47-8. Top-seeded LaSalle (20-4) was shut out for the first time this season.

La Salle loaded the bases with two out in the first inning, but Cameron, a 6-foot-2 right-hander, struck out Adam Palffy on a 3-2 pitch to get out of the jam. The Lancers got a pair of runners on base in the second and sixth innings, but couldn’t score.

Valley Christian, which stranded four runners in the first two innings, loaded the bases in the third on a pair of singles and a walk. Cameron drove in two runs with a single to left field and an errant throw allowed another to score.

Matt Osborne singled to left field to score Cameron. Osborne also tripled for the game’s only extra-base hit.

Redlands Calvary Chapel 3, L.A. Lutheran 2 -- Jake Stansell made up for an earlier error when he lofted a fly ball to right field in the top of the ninth inning that was just deep enough to drive in the winning run in the Division VI final.

It was the first title in school history for the Bears (23-4), who outlasted the Lions (15-12) in a game marked by bobbles, bloops and five errors.

Lutheran took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after two out. Alex Rizkowsky drew a walk and advanced to second base when Stansell let a pickoff attempt get away from him for an error. Steve Hill delivered a soft line drive into right field that scored Rizkowsky.

Tom Myhrvold, who came in to pitch in the seventh inning, surrendered consecutive hits in the ninth inning before Stansell delivered his sacrifice fly.
