It’s a Full Day for Valenzuela

Having appealed a three-day suspension that was to have begun this afternoon, Patrick Valenzuela, Hollywood Park’s leading jockey, will stay busy today.

Valenzuela, who won nine races last weekend, including the Quicken Tree Stakes with Continental Red, is scheduled to ride in all eight races on the card.

One of his mounts is Bronze Route, a 2-year-old Mud Route filly who will be making her first start in the sixth, a $44,000 maiden affair at five furlongs.

Bronze Route is out of the dam Golden Jewel Box, making her a half-sister to Golden Ballet. In a career that ended prematurely because of injury, Golden Ballet was a multiple stakes winner for trainer Jenine Sahadi and Team Valor.

Valenzuela’s mount in what passes as the day’s feature is Solitario. A 5-year-old Phone Trick horse trained by Mike Machowsky for owner John Zolezzi, Solitario will have only four opponents -- Vespasian, Sweepingly, Flirt With Fortune and Shadow Of Illinois -- in the $48,000 allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

A winner once in eight starts, Solitario, who was trained for his first five races by Tim Pinfield, was the beaten favorite in his last outing on May 10. It was the third time in his career he failed when favored.

Race of the day: The fourth at Hollywood Park is a wide-open turf race for 3-year-old fillies racing for a $32,000 claiming price. It’s the best betting contest on an otherwise forgettable card. Four of the eight races have six entrants or less.

One for the road: Castle Springs moves back to the turf for trainer Tom Albertani in today’s ninth at Belmont Park, a $44,000 maiden affair at one mile. The son of Machiavellian was second, beaten by less than a length, in his first start on turf earlier in the year in Dubai. Jorge Chavez will ride.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Paradise Patty, Kipper’s Kitten and Two Four Dancer in the fifth, Nut Lovin and Bronze Route in the sixth and Solitario and Sweepingly in the seventh.
