Giants Handle Athletics

Pedro Feliz had his first career two-home run game and rookie Jerome Williams earned his first major league victory, and the San Francisco Giants ended the Oakland Athletics’ season-best seven-game winning streak with a 6-4 victory Saturday night.

Williams (1-1) gave up only one hit through the first five innings and four total to win in his fifth big league start, outpitching Tim Hudson in front of a sellout crowd of 52,888.

The 21-year-old right-hander was coming off three consecutive no-decisions after losing his debut April 26 at Philadelphia. He was recalled from triple-A Fresno on June 3 to replace the injured Kurt Ainsworth.

Williams calmly worked through Oakland’s lineup, retiring 10 of the first 12 batters, including the side in the first and third innings.

Tim Worrell got six outs for his 17th save in 20 tries, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by getting Eric Byrnes to fly out.

The Giants, who had lost five of seven, got the offense Manager Felipe Alou had been looking for despite starting only five regulars.

After Friday’s 5-3 loss, Alou said there could be a shakeup to the lineup if the starters didn’t start producing, but insisted before Saturday’s game that he hasn’t gotten to that point yet.

San Francisco remained in a first-place tie with the Dodgers in the National League West.

Feliz finished three for five and got a rare start in left field because Barry Bonds was the designated hitter. Feliz hit the first pitch he saw in the first inning for a two-run homer to center field against Hudson (5-3) to put the Giants ahead, 2-0, and singled in the third. Feliz connected for his sixth homer this season in the seventh, a solo drive over the barbecue pit in left field to make it 6-1.

Williams left after Eric Chavez singled and Ramon Hernandez doubled with one out in the seventh. The Giants used four more pitchers in the inning, with Terrence Long hitting a run-scoring infield single against Scott Eyre and Eric Byrnes hitting a two-run single against Felix Rodriguez to make it 6-4.

Oakland stranded nine runners.

Hudson, who gave up 11 hits and six runs in seven innings, had his regular-season winning streak at the Coliseum end at nine games.
