Top-Seeded Li Reaches Semifinals of Boys’ 18s

Irvine University High graduate Jack Li will play Anaheim Fairmont Prep graduate Chip Hand in one singles semifinal and third-seeded Gary Sacks of Calabasas High will face second-seeded Brandon Wai of San Diego in the other today in the boys’ 18 division of the Southern California Tennis Assn. junior sectional championships at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

The top-seeded Li defeated Adam Loucks of Irvine, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in a quarterfinal on Friday. Fourth-seeded Hand defeated former Granada Hills standout Nima Roshan, 6-4, 6-4.

The No. 3-seeded Sacks, who won the Southern Section individual singles title last month, advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Justin Montgomery of Oxnard. Wai defeated Glendale Hoover junior Samuel Tadevosian, 7-5, 6-0.

The four semifinalists also met in a doubles semifinal on Friday, with the No. 3-seeded team of Li and Hand upsetting top-seeded Sacks and Wai, 7-5, 6-4.

They will play Jason Mossembekker of Camarillo and Jonathan Sanchez of Fullerton for the title at 3:30 p.m. today. Mossembekker, a Camarillo High graduate, and Sanchez, an Anaheim Servite High junior, won, 6-4, 6-4, over Scott Hohenstein of Anaheim and Nathan Stadler of Redondo Beach.

The 2003 eight-man All-Star football game will be played at 5 tonight at Excelsior Adult School, 15711 Pioneer Blvd., Norwalk.

Riverside Christian’s Dave DeWoody will coach the East team and Avalon’s Earl Schrader will coach the West.

The game benefits Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for students with school ID and children ages 3-12.

Quarterback Rocky Hinds, one of the top college prospects for 2004, will lead Playa del Rey St. Bernard in the “Who’s Got Game? Football Challenge” passing tournament from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Redondo High.

Sixteen schools will compete in the tournament. A coaching clinic with USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow will take place at 8 a.m. Admission is free and there will be football clinics for children.
